Today a photo of my 2nd-Great Grandmother Garrison arrived in the mail.

Julia Alice Boreham was born in Suffolk, England on January 4, 1846, (see Birth record) to William and Harriet (Clarke) Boreham.

Between 1858-1860, Julia came to the United States.  Her parents and brother, Howard, appear on the 1860 census in Chatham, NJ. However, I have had no success with locating Julia on the 1860 census.  Nonetheless, later censuses show Julia’s migration to have happened in 1858 or 1860.

Before 1863, Julia moved west with her mother and brother and settled in Waupaca, WI.  Unconfirmed reports from other genealogists say that Julia’s father returned to England to conduct business and died during the trip. The date and location of his death are not known.

According to Civil War pension records, maintained in the National Archives, Julia married Levi Garrison in Rock County, WI on October 18, 1863 (see Marriage record).

The 1870 Census lists Levi and Julia living in Kane, IL with their 4-year-old daughter Ida.

Between 1870-1873, Julia and Levi moved to Curwensville, Clearfield County, PA (the place of Levi’s birth). The 1880 Census shows Levi , Julia, Ida and a son, Sturley, living in the household.  At the time, Sturley was 7-years-old and his place of birth is listed as Pennsylvania.

By 1900, Levi and Julia were living at 3 Barbara Street, Trenton, NJ with their son William, 19.  The 1900 Census asked women about children born to them. The information recorded paints a sad picture.

The censuses only record Ida, Sturley and William. The names of the other children are unknown.  The other child still living in 1900 was my Great Grandfather Sturley.

On September 24, 1914, Levi Garrison died. At the time of his death Julia and Levi were living at 113 Girard Avenue, Trenton, NJ.

After Levi’s death Julia moved to Jacksonville, FL where she lived with her son and granddaughter for a time. Julia remained in Florida for the remainder of her life and died on October 6, 1938 (see Death Certificate).  At the time of her death she was living with her granddaughter and great granddaughter Virginia.

It is Virginia “Ginger” who mailed the photo of Julia to me, along with other family photos and notes.  To place the relationship in perspective, Ginger is a first cousin of my grandfather Charles Garrison.
